United States – The issue of the Ukraine war becomes increasingly important in the campaigns for the US presidential elections as the date approaches. Perhaps this is what drives former President Donald Trump, who is seeking re-election, to repeat the promise of ending the war within 24 hours. However, experts doubt Trump’s ability to fulfill this significant promise.
Two political researchers disagree with Trump’s ability to achieve this major promise, questioning, as reported by “Sky News Arabia,” the reason behind it and what drives the former president to repeat these statements.
Latest Statement
On Sunday, during an interview with the program “Sunday Morning Futures” on Fox News, Trump renewed his claim that he is capable of resolving the Ukrainian crisis within just 24 hours if he is re-elected as president.
He attributed this to his strong relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while stating that the current US President, Joe Biden, is incapable of dealing with world leaders.
Trump said that he would send a clear message to Zelensky, stating, “Enough… You must make a peace agreement with the Russians,” and if Putin refuses peace, he would threaten to withdraw support for Ukraine.
In May of last year, Trump spoke to CNN about stopping the war within 24 hours, based on the weaknesses and strengths of Putin and Zelensky, as well as to halt the bloodshed.
Zelensky responded to Trump’s statements during his visit to Rome in the same month, stating that he was the president of the United States when Russia annexed Crimea, and he did not intervene to resolve the issue.
“Propaganda and Escape from Trial”
Mohammed Al-Yamani, an expert in international relations, disagrees with Trump’s optimism that he can end the war within 24 hours, considering these statements as aiming to “increase his popularity and secure his re-election.” This suggests an attempt to exploit the anger of a significant number of Americans towards the prolonged duration of the war and the extensive financial and military support provided to Kiev.
Al-Yamani supports his opinion by pointing out that Trump had a “very poor relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin when Trump was president.”
The same view is held by American political researcher Mahdi Afifi, regarding Trump’s statements as electoral tactics. He also notes that the Russian-Ukrainian war is supported by 169 countries, some of whom see it as a particular threat to Europe. Hence, he does not believe it can be ended so easily.
According to Afifi’s assessment, if Trump does return to power, what he could potentially do is withdraw American support from Ukraine, allow Russia to occupy its territories, and transform Ukraine into a peripheral state, as stated by the same speaker.
Trump is vigorously seeking to postpone his trial until after the elections in the case of secret documents related to national security, which he is accused of concealing and retaining after his previous presidency ended in 2021, known as the “Mar-a-Lago Documents.”
Jack Smith, the American investigator in the case, rejected a request made by Trump’s defense team in July to postpone the trial scheduled for December, to a date after the elections slated for 2024.
